Denton County Friends of the Family and the Fight to Thrive

Located in Denton, Texas, Denton County Friends of the Family was founded in the fall of 1980. In the beginning, the shelter was a 900 square foot house that sheltered up to 8 women and 1 child. It had 2 employees, an executive director and counselor, and 32 volunteers. They got their funding from contract with the City of Denton, and private donations. Children’s services for clients were limited, and their crisis hotline was completely volunteer staffed. Within 3 years the shelter had become a Denton County United Way agency. They received multiple grants from multiple departments within the State of Texas. They were also able to serve 271 clients, after increasing the shelter’s square footage to 4,400 feet.

The Denton Community Food Center and the Shared Burden of Survival

Food is not only a human need, but also a human right. The human body cannot live without it. Without food, the chances of making it to tomorrow become gradually unlikely. Metabolizing food so our bodies can function is one of many things humans have in common with other living things. Foraging for calories, for sustenance, be it in garbage receptacles, on the vacant tables of eating establishments, or in workplaces, is not a shameful act. It is survival by any means. Some choose to survive in so-called undignified ways because hunger is painful. It hurts.

Giving Hope, Inc.: The Mission is in the Name

How does someone reach another who cannot be reached? They become a bridge and provide support. One, then, can embark on a new journey toward wholeness, and attain that which we all need. Shelter from the elements, from instability, and from hopelessness are not acquired by sheer will, alone. Grit and determination only get us so far, on our walk, especially when despair is right around the corner. There are times when, for some, the support a bridge provides is the only way out of the darkness. There are times when that support helps us move away from the grips of despair. There are times when that support leads us further, beyond where even we thought our own feet could carry us. There is great power, in hope. When we give it a chance, more becomes possible.
